Miss S. Florine Broadhead 1859-1942

Miss S. Florine Broadhead, 83, of 130 South Main Street, member of one of Jamestown's oldest families closely identified with the business, cultural and social activities of the communtiy, died at the W.C.A. Hospital at 2:45 a.m. today. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Mertie Broadhead Howard; a niece, Mrs. Gladys Broadhead Malthy, widow of George L. Malthy, of this city, and two nephews, A. Harrison Reynolds of Jamestown and William A. Boadhead of Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., and was a sister of the late Almet N. and Shelden B. Broadhead of this city.

Miss Broadhead was born in Jamestown April 12, 1859, daughter of William and Lucy Cobb Broadhead, her father being the founder and operator of the Broadhead Worsted Mills, and spent her entire lifetime here, graduating from Jamestown High School with the class of 1879 and from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1882.

She founded Jamestown Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, on April 18, 1900, and was an active figure in patriotic and historical organizations of state and nationwide scope as well as locally. For 18 years she served the local D.A.R. chapter as regent and for two terms she headed the state society as regent, after which she served the local chapter for 12 more years, since which she had held the title of honorary regent.

She served for almost 10 years as a member of the Jamestown Board of Education; and had been vice president, treasurer and trustee of the Women's Christian Association Hospital; was president of the first Kindergarten Association in this city and a member of the Colonial Dames of America; United States Daughters of 1812, Maria Mitchell Association, Association for the Preservation of Virginia's Antiquities, alumni association of Vassar College, Chautauauq County Historical Society, Jamestown Women's Republican Club, Chautauqua County Women's Republical Club, Jamestown Garden Club, first Congregational Church and its Women's Guild.

Funeral services will be held at the family home Saturday at 3 p.m.

Funeral services for Miss S. Florine Broadhead were held this afternoon at the family residence, 130 South Main Street. Rev. Dr. Alfred E. Randell of the First Congregational Church officiatin. The bearers were Fletcher Goodwill, Henry K. Smith, George a. Hahne, Fred H. Broadhead, Ernest Broadhead and J. Russell Rogerson. Interment was in the Broadhead family mausoleum in Lakeview Cemetery.

Attending the services from away were Miss Grace Howard of Attica, N.Y., daughter of Mrs. Albert J. Howard of this city; William A. Broadhead of Skaneateles, N.Y. and the Misses Alta Phillips and Bertha Haskins of Wellsville, N.Y.
